As the most easily accessible of all the Scottish Islands, a vacation on the Isle of Bute will not disappoint. The island has been named as one of National Geographic’s 'Top10' global adventure trips. The West Island Way Walk starts in a wee village close by and is just one of the breathtaking walks available on the island. There are three golf courses on the island, cycle tracks, horse riding, sailing, kayaking, swimming pools, a cinema and an abundance of wildlife to see. A popular destination for fishing, the inland lochs are popular with anglers for coarse and game fishing. Loch Fad offers anglers an opportunity to fish for rainbow trout and is only 3 mile from the house, for anyone with an interest in sea angling you’ll be spoilt for choice. Within walking distance is Mount Stuart House, a Gothic Revival country house and the ancestral home of the Marquesses of Bute. It was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson for the 3rd Marquess of Bute in the late 1870’s after a fire destroyed the earlier house by Alexander McGill in 1877. Open to the public with its beautiful gardens to explore, the house has become a popular location for wealthy celebrity weddings including Stella McCartney and JB Gill from the band JLS. The house is a twenty minute walk away from the main seaside town of Rothesay, which is populated with cafes, restaurants, public houses and an array of independent shops.

Wemyss Bay – Rothesay The principal route to the island is by car & passenger ferry from Wemyss Bay. The crossing takes 35 mins with sailings every 45mins – 1 hour depending upon the time of day. If you’re not driving catch one of the frequent trains from Glasgow Central Station – jump on the train at Paisley if you have flown in to Glasgow Airport. Prestwick Airport (Ryamair Hub) is also only 45 mins drive down the coast.
